Filmelab is an award-winning film education initiative that provides a programme of projects, workshops and screenings. Our aim is to give in-depth access to the world of independent and industry filmmaking and to support to anyone embanking on film and video projects of their own, either as individuals, groups or organisations.
The first port of call for film in Luton and Bedfordshire, Filmelab is a central source for advice, support and project development.
Our work can be broken into 3 key areas.
Our open door allows filmmakers to come in and discuss ideas, seek advice, get feedback and potentially have production support where possible. Though we cannot get involved in every production we can help point people in the right direction for sourcing cast, crew and equipment.
We are not a production company or equipment hire service, but a facilitator and a source of advice for anyone who wants to take the next step, to stop talking, and start working.
Filmelab works both independently and with partners to provide increased access to diverse and alternative cinema. The Underground Cinema is a weekly independent film club screening films that don’t tend to grace the multiplexes. And there’s Filmstock, the town’s highly respected international film festival, which is an active partner of Filmelab.
We can assist in the provision of screenings in terms of advice, film booking and technical support as well as working with you to increase the impact and delivery of your screening idea.
Filmelab believes in training through experience. Much of our work so far and our big projects in development are to create opportunities where people can gain film experience on the job, running short film productions as teaching tools and providing internship opportunities.
The availability and use of film technology is increasing rapidly but the craft isn’t always acquired at the same pace. Filmelab works with schools, colleges and individuals trying to bridge that gap and encourage industry placements, real filmmaking experiences and disciplines along with highlighting the vast array of jobs within film.
